Canvas Art Rugs (Traditional Floorcloths)
The gallery displays traditional Floor Cloths or Wall Hangings, which are painted canvas rugs.
Historically linseed oil was applied to used sails from ships, hence the term "oil cloths". These cloths were used to cover bare wood floors. Eventually textiles were shipped from Europe and our own textile mills were started. Later these utilitarian floor coverings were decorated to look like carpet or expensive tile.
· Many layers of durable base paint are applied to sized and primed artist canvas (100% cotton duck). Decorative designs are then painted on.
· Lastly, several layers of polyacrylic are then applied. These rugs are easily maintained and will last a century.
· Each floor cloth can be used as a decorative floor coverings or a wall hanging from a decorative rod.
